Two zones, both inside Kraków
A common mistake in guides and on company websites is saying that “zone II means driving outside Kraków”. Under the Kraków City Council resolution both zones lie within the city limits:
- zone I - the inner part of the city: the centre and most housing estates,
- zone II - the rest of Kraków beyond the zone I boundary, i.e. the outskirts.
Outside Kraków - at Balice airport, in Wieliczka, Skawina or Zabierzów - Kraków’s maximum fares do not apply at all. Among the municipalities around Kraków only Zielonki has its own maximum fares.
Fares in each zone
| Charge | Zone I | Zone II |
|---|---|---|
| Flag fall | PLN 9 | PLN 9 |
| 1 km by day (6:00-22:00, weekdays) | PLN 4 | PLN 8 |
| 1 km at night, Sundays and holidays | PLN 6 | PLN 12 |
| One hour of waiting | PLN 55 | PLN 55 |
These are the maximum fares from resolution no. XCII/2512/22, in force since 29 July 2022. Companies may charge less - see the taxi fares page.
Where the zone I boundary runs
The zone I boundary is described in an annex to the 2009 resolution by streets, railway lines and rivers. We reconstructed it on the map below. Zone I covers the whole centre, Grzegórzki, Krowodrza, Łagiewniki, Czyżyny, Bieńczyce and Podgórze Duchackie, and almost all of Prądnik Czerwony and Mistrzejowice. Outer districts are split, e.g. Dębniki (Tyniec and Sidzina are zone II), Swoszowice (zone I only north of the A4) and Nowa Huta (zone I only in the historic part). We describe every district on the Kraków districts pages.
How a ride across two zones is charged
- If a ride starts and ends in the same zone, one tariff applies - even if the route partly crosses the other zone.
- When driving from zone I into zone II, the driver tells you about the zone boundaries before starting the meter and lets you know when switching to the higher tariff.
- For rides out of Kraków the driver may ask for a deposit or payment in advance.
You can estimate a fare split between Kraków and outside in the calculator.
